2019 Roland Garros: Wawrinka captures win 500

Date
01 June 2019

Stan Wawrinka reached another milestone, while players from Team Yonex advance to the second week in Paris for the first time in their careers.

Day 6

19-year-old Marketa Vondrousova (CZE) is one of two players in the bottom half of the draw that has yet to drop a set thus far. The Czech left-hander has shown her maturity in her last three matches and said her win over clay court specialist [28] Carla Suarez Navarro was the biggest result of her career.

“It was a very tough match for me,” said Vondrousova, who has reached the quarterfinals or better in her last five tournaments. “I think I was just trying to keep focused and stay aggressive.”

Vondrousova’s next opponent will be 12th-seeded Anastasija Sevastova, who survived a 3-hour, 18-minute battle against [20] Elise Mertens. Sevastova dropped the opening set in a tiebreaker but rallied back to force a decider.

In the final set, Sevastova faced five match points - saving four of them with winners - to advance to the second week in Paris for the first time in her career.

"In the end, we both didn't deserve to lose,” said Sevastova, who hit more than 50 winners. "It was just a millimeter.”

[23] Donna Vekic (CRO) will join also join Vondrousova and Sevastova in the fourth round for the first time in their careers after she defeated [15] Belinda Bencic (SUI) in straight-sets.

Bencic held a 2-0 edge from their previous meetings, but Vekic started fast and finished in dominating fashion, winning 8 of the final 9 games to advance.

Day 7

[24] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) was on the brink of his 500th ATP career victory when his match was suspended for darkness on Friday.

Leading Grigor Dimitrov two-sets-to-love after winning the first two sets in tiebreakers, Wawrinka was determined to finish the match in straight sets when he returned to the court on Saturday.

The pair traded breaks in the third and eventually arrived at another tiebreaker, where Wawrinka rallied back from 2-6 and saved five match points to win the tiebreaker 10-8, escaping with a 7-6, 7-6, 7-6 victory.

Wawrinka, who fired off 14 aces and 57 winners, became the the ninth-active player to reach the 500-win career milestone.
